Savoy Court in London is the only road where drivers must drive on the right side instead of the left, a rule that applies to the private road leading to the famous Savoy hotel and theatre. The unusual arrangement was designed to allow taxis to drop off and pick up theatre-goers without blocking the hotel entrance, and possibly to spare wealthy women from walking around horse-drawn carriages. The traffic congestion from this system was once so severe that a police officer had to be stationed there to direct traffic in the 1960s.
