The Dutch are filling gas wells with cement

The Dutch government is permanently filling gas wells in Groningen with cement to prevent future governments from reversing its decision to stop domestic gas production by 2023. Though the inactive wells pose no safety or environmental risk, the government is destroying them after succumbing to local pressure from residents who exaggerated earthquake concerns caused by extraction, despite the remaining 500 billion cubic metres of gas reserves being worth approximately €200 billion.
