The "benchmarkpocalypse" refers to the increasing ease of gaming benchmark performance metrics using AI and automated tools, where optimizations improve test scores without delivering real-world performance gains. While benchmark manipulation has always existed, LLMs and automated agents now make it trivial to exploit large benchmark suites in ways that previously required skilled engineers, rendering many formerly trustworthy benchmarks unreliable unless results are independently audited. The author demonstrates this risk through their own FRE regex engine project, which achieved impressive benchmark scores through overfitting but performed 10x slower on real-world test cases.
