Terrastruct has open-sourced TALA (Terrastruct's AutoLayout Algorithm) under the MPL-2.0 license, making it available as a novel orthogonal layout engine designed specifically for software architecture diagrams. Unlike traditional DAG-based layout algorithms, TALA considers multiple aesthetic objectives including symmetry, clustering, and flow, and uniquely supports customizable node positions for hybrid use cases where some coordinates are specified while others are auto-laid out. The algorithm has tradeoffs including non-deterministic results when inputs change slightly and longer runtime for larger diagrams, but is now bundled in D2 v0.9.0 for users to test.
