Switzerland's federal government is piloting a migration from Microsoft 365 to open-source alternatives on 3,000 workstations (about 7% of its 54,000 computers), with completion targeted for end of 2027. The move aims to address concerns about foreign data access, vendor dependency, and rising licensing costs, following a successful proof-of-concept with 172 employees. Switzerland's military is already accelerating its own transition to open-source tools, planning to complete the switch by October 2026.
