Spaghettifying DRAM
A security research project called "skitter-creek-bath-salts" exploits DRAM controller vulnerabilities in AMD Family 16h CPUs to bypass memory protections and unlock restricted system features including the Platform Security Processor, System Management Mode, CPU microcode, and other platform secrets. By manipulating DRAM address translations at the hardware level, the tool circumvents the security boundaries that normally isolate these components from the kernel and user space. The technique works only on older AMD processors whose datasheets documented the DRAM controller's translation registers; newer generations (17h and beyond) removed this documentation.
