A team launched a high-altitude weather balloon payload called UpLink across Montana in 2025 to test 3D-printed enclosures using foaming PLA filament as an alternative to traditional styrofoam boxes, and to transmit high-resolution images via radio link. The custom-designed enclosure weighed significantly less than standard foam alternatives, reducing helium costs while maintaining thermal insulation for sensitive electronics and sensors at high altitudes. Despite their efforts to improve tracking systems and data transmission based on lessons from a previous balloon project, the team ultimately lost track of the balloon during the chase.
