A hobbyist has rebuilt the classic MOS 6502 microprocessor—which powered the Apple II, Commodore 64, and NES—using discrete electronic components, with each of the 3,500 transistors replaced by individual SOT-323 packages soldered onto an A4-sized board. The layout faithfully reproduces the original chip's internal structure at a much larger scale, maintaining the authentic dynamic NMOS design rather than converting it to modern logic, and includes 55 LEDs to display the CPU's state as it executes instructions at a few hundred times slower speed than the original.
