Scrap

Moxie Marlinspike recalls moving to Pittsburgh in winter unprepared for the harsh conditions, finding a house without utilities that required extensive repairs using salvaged materials. He discovers that Pittsburgh has a culture of "scrappers" who collect scrap metal, learning this when a cast-iron bathtub mysteriously disappears from his yard, only to later intentionally leave another broken tub out back for scrappers to retrieve. The piece captures an encounter with two scrappers, Ron and Wade, who help remove metal and appliances from his house in exchange for the valuable scrap materials.
