Scientists have invented underwater umbrellas that shade corals to reduce sun exposure and protect them from bleaching caused by warming ocean waters. A study published in Frontiers in Marine Science demonstrated that corals in the Caribbean shaded by these structures experienced less bleaching and some even recovered their color. While the current design works well for smaller areas like individual corals and nurseries, researchers believe future engineering improvements could extend the solution to larger reef areas.
