Scientists have created a new form of ice called superionic ice at extreme conditions of 2.3 million atmospheres pressure and temperatures exceeding 2,600 kelvins—conditions normally expected to turn water into gas. This exotic state of matter features oxygen atoms locked in a rigid crystal lattice while hydrogen nuclei move freely like a liquid, and it is believed to exist deep within planets like Uranus and Neptune where it may influence their magnetic fields.
