OpenComputer scaled from a single VM to support one million sandboxes by moving away from a single-region architecture constrained by cloud provider CPU quotas. The company restructured its system into distributed "cells" across multiple cloud providers (using four providers total) with an edge-based global registry that routes sandbox creation requests to the cell with available capacity. This approach transformed capacity expansion from a migration project into a simple deployment step, allowing them to add regions and cloud infrastructure indefinitely.
