Researchers have developed an open-source solution using Scikit-decide framework combined with fuel consumption models and NOAA wind data to optimize aircraft flight paths and reduce jet fuel consumption by thousands of dollars per flight. The system, which has been in development for six years, can also be applied to airline scheduling and drone swarm path planning, offering a free alternative to existing commercial offerings like Jeppesen. The solution uses reinforcement learning and automated planning to configure optimal routes based on wind conditions for various aircraft models including the Boeing 787 and Airbus A320.
