Saab has unveiled its A3 collaborative combat aircraft concept, an autonomous, supersonic, tailless aircraft designed to complement its Gripen E fighter and potentially serve as a stepping stone toward Sweden's future crewed combat aircraft in the 2040s. Unlike lower-cost U.S. alternatives in the Collaborative Combat Aircraft program, Saab's high-end concept is intended to eventually require airspace certification for routine operations in Europe's controlled airspace and to handle expanding mission requirements. The A3 concept reflects Saab's strategy as Sweden deliberates its fighter replacement plans under the Swedish Concept Air Program, with a government decision expected by 2030.
