RFC8950 enables routing of IPv4 traffic over IPv6 next-hops without tunneling, allowing networks to run IPv6-only backbones while still supporting IPv4 at the edges. This is achieved by extending Multi-protocol BGP to use IPv6 as the control plane for IPv4 routes, while IPv4 data remains unchanged on the wire. The capability is widely supported across major routing platforms and offers significant operational benefits such as reducing IPv4 configuration overhead in core networks while maintaining backward compatibility with IPv4-only customers.
