Resurrecting the SuperH Architecture (2015)

A team of developers is reviving the SuperH processor architecture, an older Hitachi design whose patents have expired, to create open-source hardware capable of running Linux. Their J2 core design can be synthesized on low-cost FPGAs or manufactured at scale, offering comparable performance to modern system-on-chip designs while maintaining the simplicity needed to run Linux with minimal requirements like a 32-bit memory space, CPU registers, I/O, and a timer.
