Renault: Electric motors with no rare earths

Renault Group has established itself as a pioneer in developing electrically excited synchronous motors (EESM) that require no rare earth elements, differentiating itself in a market where 90% of electric vehicles use magnet-based motors. Since beginning mass production in 2012, Renault has equipped models like the Zoe, Megane E-Tech, and Scenic E-Tech with successive generations of EESM technology, with a third-generation E7A motor delivering 200 kW and 30% smaller size expected in 2027. This strategic focus on rare earth-free motors addresses supply chain vulnerabilities while maintaining high efficiency and performance.
