In 1996, id Software released Quake on CD-ROM with encrypted versions of their full game catalogue, hoping to bypass retailers by allowing customers to unlock the full game with a password purchased via phone. However, hackers cracked the encryption within 39 days, and gamers exploited the shareware to access the full version for free, forcing id Software to abandon the retail shareware experiment and leaving them with approximately 150,000 unsold CDs in a warehouse.
