Pre-Greek: The lost language hidden within Ancient Greek

Ancient Greek contains approximately 1,000 words—including names like Achilles, Odysseus, and Athens, as well as common terms like "olive" and "labyrinth"—that cannot be traced to any known Indo-European or neighboring language source. Linguists theorize these mysterious words are remnants of pre-Greek languages spoken by earlier inhabitants of Greece before Indo-European languages dominated the region. This linguistic "fossil record" suggests that Ancient Greek absorbed vocabulary from the Neolithic farming societies that preceded the Indo-European arrival in Europe.
