Porting the ThinkPad X61 to Coreboot

A developer successfully ported coreboot (open-source firmware) to the ThinkPad X61 using AI-assisted reverse engineering, dramatically reducing what would typically be a 3-6 month project. The process involved using Claude LLM technology to accelerate the reverse engineering of the vendor BIOS and platform specifications (GM965 northbridge and ICH8 southbridge) that lacked publicly available documentation. By systematically dumping firmware information and leveraging AI tools, the developer achieved a working coreboot port on hardware that previous attempts with traditional reverse engineering methods had failed to port.
