Pacing the frontier
Over 1,100 employees of leading AI companies have signed a statement urging the U.S. government to develop international technical and governance tools to deliberately slow the pace of frontier AI development. The signatories warn that as AI systems approach the capability to automate their own research, progress could accelerate beyond humanity's ability to understand or control these systems, posing significant safety risks. They argue that while individual companies and countries face competitive pressure to advance quickly, coordinated mechanisms are needed to buy time for developing security measures and strengthening oversight.
