Over 30% of new ArXiv paper submissions are now flagged as machine-written, with the share rising sharply since ChatGPT's release in late 2022. Researchers calibrated their AI-detection tool using pre-ChatGPT papers as a ground-truth human baseline (with a 0.4% false-positive rate) to avoid inflated claims, and found significant variation across fields, with computer science reaching 65% and other disciplines ranging from 31-56%. The detector's consistent low flagging rate on pre-2023 papers confirms the rise reflects genuine increase in AI-generated submissions rather than measurement artifact.
