Open-sourcing AstaBrief, the fast report-generation model in Asta

AI2 has open-sourced AstaBrief 8B, a lightweight model designed to generate scientific reports with citations faster than larger proprietary models like Claude. The model achieves approximately 3.5× faster report generation (51 seconds versus 178 seconds) by processing entire reports in a single pass rather than section-by-section, while maintaining quality comparable to larger alternatives. The open-source release includes training data and example workflows, enabling researchers to run the model locally on their own infrastructure for sensitive or unpublished research.
