Open-Source 5G Ran Platforms: A Dual Perspective on Performance and Capabilities

Researchers conducted a comparative evaluation of two major open-source 5G RAN platforms—OpenAirInterface (OAI) and srsRAN—assessing their features, deployment flexibility, and performance across various configurations and real-world applications. The study analyzed radio resource control setup, data rate compliance, and latency-sensitive workloads including video streaming and cloud gaming to provide a comprehensive view of each platform's capabilities. This work addresses the gap in existing research by evaluating both platforms under diverse conditions with different Software-Defined Radios, configurations, and numbers of actual user devices.
