Researchers have identified a persistent 1-minute oscillatory pattern in global power grid frequency data, caused by clock-synchronized control software in digital energy devices like battery storage systems and uninterruptible power supplies creating synchronized power-demand peaks. This cyber-physical synchronization effect, distinct from classical resonance phenomena, has increased in amplitude over recent years and contributes to wear on hydropower systems and stricter frequency-control requirements. The rapid expansion of battery storage, data centers, and internet-connected devices may further amplify these oscillations, necessitating improved control design strategies.
