Next.js 16.4 introduces Cache Components as the new default programming model, which enables fast initial loads, instant client navigation, and declarative caching for server-rendered apps. The release closes previous performance gaps and is now recommended for all Next.js apps, with new projects using Cache Components by default and migration tools available for existing applications. Additional improvements include reduced memory usage, smaller bundle sizes, faster compile times, and React 19.3 support.
