.name Termination

On July 28, 2026, ICANN approved Verisign's proposal to eliminate the entire third-level domain hierarchy under .name, which will force the termination of approximately 22,000 registered domains including neil.fraser.name—a domain registered nearly 25 years ago and used for email, web hosting, and IoT services. The author warns this creates a serious security risk, as the freed second-level domains could be purchased by others who would gain access to hundreds of associated accounts and services linked to the original email addresses.
