Mexico's Federal Attorney's Office for Environmental Protection (Profepa) has launched an aggressive crackdown on unauthorized coastal developments, declaring that all unauthorized construction will be demolished rather than simply fined. The agency is shifting away from its previous approach of imposing fines that developers readily absorbed as business costs, instead prioritizing environmental restoration and damage repair. The campaign addresses critical issues in Yucatán, where 23,000 hectares were recently devastated, with particular focus on developments lacking required Environmental Impact Statements.
