Making Graphics Like it's 1993
Marko Stanic is developing Catlantean 3D, a first-person shooter intentionally built using 1990s graphics techniques, including a 320x240 resolution, 256-color palette, and hand-crafted assets, which he plans to release on Steam next year. The project imposes strict self-imposed constraints such as building everything from scratch with no AI assistance and ensuring all rendering and sound mixing are done manually. The developer argues that technical limitations like the 256-color palette force deliberate creative choices that ultimately result in better-looking graphics, similar to classic games like Doom and Duke Nukem.
