Making difficulty curves in games
Game developers should structure difficulty progression around introducing new mechanics rather than making games progressively harder overall, allowing players to master each mechanic before encountering the next challenge. Rather than a smooth upward curve, the ideal "difficulty saw" groups related mechanics together, with each new mechanic having its own learning curve, which gives players a sense of progression and accomplishment while preventing frustration from sudden difficulty spikes.
