'Likweli': A new monkey species discovered in the Congo Basin

An international team of scientists, including Yale researchers, has identified a new Colobus monkey species called "Likweli" in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Lomami National Park, making it only the fifth new African monkey species discovered in the past 75 years. The rare, black monkey is distinguished by orange-cream patches around its mouth and nose, and its identification was confirmed through analysis of physical traits, genetics, and vocalizations. The discovery underscores the importance of protecting the biodiversity of Lomami National Park and was made possible through collaboration with Congolese field researchers.
