An unreleased research version of Claude improved upon a longstanding mathematical problem related to the Riemann hypothesis, increasing the known lower bound for zeros of the Riemann zeta function from 41.6% to 67.2%. While Claude did not solve the famous unsolved Riemann hypothesis itself, mathematicians at Anthropic validated its proof and experts confirmed the result, demonstrating significant progress in AI models' mathematical capabilities. The researchers do not expect Claude's techniques will lead to proving the Riemann hypothesis, but the work illustrates the rapid advancement of AI in complex mathematical reasoning.
