Ken Thompson created Unix on a PDP-7 computer at Bell Labs after losing access to a GE-645 machine, initially aiming to optimize disk throughput algorithms. Working alone for three weeks while his family was on vacation, Thompson wrote a complete operating system including a file system, compiler, editor, assembler, loader, and user protection mechanisms in assembly language. Dennis Ritchie later joined the project, and together they published "The Unix Time-Sharing System," which became foundational to modern operating system design.
