Respan is an open-source Rust AI gateway built with a plugin-based architecture that allows teams to customize their AI infrastructure without modifying the core system. Unlike traditional LLM gateways that bundle numerous providers and features, Respan provides a minimal core responsible only for event dispatching, with everything else—providers, protocols, modalities, and security features—implemented as extensible plugins. The founders created Respan after managing unsustainable wrapper code on top of LiteLLM and designed it to solve the problem of adding new features to gateways without breaking existing functionality.
