Kimi K3, Qwen 3.8, and Anthropic's (Potential) Unravelling

Two new state-of-the-art AI models—Moonshot Labs' Kimi K3 and Alibaba's Qwen 3.8—were recently launched and will have their weights publicly released, performing close to Anthropic's Fable 5 while threatening traditional model developers' competitive advantage. The article argues that owning infrastructure (data centers and power plants) is crucial for profitability in the AI model business, as companies that lease infrastructure face margin constraints that scale with revenue, whereas those with owned infrastructure can convert costs to fixed expenses and grow margins with usage. This shift toward open-source frontier models and infrastructure ownership creates strategic challenges, particularly for Anthropic, which may struggle with product differentiation without vertical integration advantages.
