Computer keyboards once featured numerous unique symbols across different platforms, but most have been lost to time as text labels became standard. IBM and other manufacturers in the 20th century experimented with iconography for keys like space, print screen, and key beep, though office PC users eventually rejected these confusing symbols. Today, only four key symbols remain widely accepted on PC keyboards: ⇧ (Shift), ↵ (Enter), ⇥ (Tab), and an arrow for Backspace.
