In 2014, an intern named Dzmitry Bahdanau at the University of Montreal developed a mathematical mechanism called "attention" to solve the problem of neural networks struggling with long sentence translations. This attention mechanism, which allows AI models to focus on relevant parts of input data rather than cramming everything into fixed memory, became the foundational technology underlying modern large language models like ChatGPT and the current AI revolution. The innovation demonstrated that attention—the ability to selectively process information—may be central to how artificial intelligence achieves human-like intelligence.
