IPFS Maintainers Winding Down

Protocol Labs has ended its funding for Shipyard, the organization maintaining core IPFS infrastructure and projects, requiring it to wind down all IPFS-related operations by September 30, 2026. This will result in multiple critical IPFS projects losing dedicated maintainers and the shutdown of public infrastructure services like ipfs.io and dweb.link, though Protocol Labs will determine the future of these services. Shipyard had previously achieved significant improvements to IPFS, including reducing gateway operating costs by 80% and advancing HTTP-native implementations, but will not be able to continue planned developments.
