IBM has revealed a next-generation z/Architecture processor that uniquely supports both z/Architecture and ARM instruction sets through integrated decoders within a shared decode pipeline, marking a significant architectural innovation similar in concept but technically different from the original Itanium. The design handles the challenge of z/Architecture's big-endian format and ARM's little-endian format through hardware-based byte swapping in the load-store unit, requiring no software intervention.
