A software engineer used AI to search 400 years of digitized Dutch East India Company archives and discovered multiple historical findings including a forgotten meteorite report, unrecorded volcanic eruptions, and lost rhinos. The project was inspired by a historian who used AI to uncover a new eyewitness account of the extinct dodo in the same archives, and employed an automated research pipeline that cross-referenced AI findings against original documents to ensure accuracy.
