I built my own root DNS so I could stop renting names

Anthony Ettinger created Moshpit, a personal root DNS system that allows users to claim free custom top-level domains (like .eggs or .hacker) and mint unlimited subdomains under them, eliminating the recurring costs of traditional domain registration. The system operates as a local resolver that works alongside the standard DNS, requiring users to explicitly opt in, and currently has over 5,600 claimed endings with many held by Ettinger himself.
