How the words we teach English language learners changed

Between 1953 and 2023, the essential English vocabulary list for language learners underwent significant changes, dropping about 600 concrete, hands-on words like "apple," "fork," and "flour" while adding over 1,100 more abstract terms like "mortgage," "corporation," and "analysis." These shifts reflect how modern English increasingly emphasizes conceptual and professional vocabulary over practical, physical objects as everyday life has become less centered on manual tasks and more focused on abstract thinking and digital communication.
