How Thailand Resisted Colonization

Thailand resisted European colonization partly through the strategic leadership of King Mongkut (later Rama IV), who discovered and promoted the Ramkhamhaeng Stele—an ancient stone inscription depicting an idealized Thai kingdom with sovereignty, sophisticated governance, and Buddhist traditions. By leveraging this historical artifact and scholarly interpretation, Thailand's royal family used cultural and diplomatic influence to strengthen national identity and legitimacy during a period when European powers were colonizing neighboring territories in Southeast Asia.
