How McDonald's first got its start
The McDonald brothers, Mac and Dick, emigrated from New Hampshire to Southern California in the 1920s seeking fortune in the film industry, but instead found work as low-paid laborers on movie sets. Unable to advance in Hollywood, they pooled their savings to purchase a movie theater in 1930 in Glendale, California, marking the beginning of their entrepreneurial journey that would eventually lead to the McDonald's empire.
