Hooray for the Sockets Interface

In 1983, UC Berkeley released BSD 4.2 with the revolutionary "sockets" networking model, which standardized how computers communicate over networks and enabled widespread internet access worldwide. Prior to sockets, network protocols were inconsistent across systems and operating systems were distributed on physical tapes requiring manual installation via tedious switch-flipping procedures. The sockets interface transformed networked UNIX systems into a standardized, consistent platform that fundamentally shaped the development of modern online services.
