Hackers Stalked Me by Hijacking a Smartwatch for Kids

A security researcher demonstrated critical vulnerabilities in a cheap children's smartwatch by remotely tracking a WIRED reporter's location using Wi-Fi networks, secretly photographing him, and eavesdropping through its microphone without any visible indication. The vulnerable device is made by an obscure Chinese manufacturer and uses a backend platform shared by dozens of other smartwatch brands, potentially exposing over 30 geolocation devices to the same stalking capabilities. Researchers plan to present findings at Black Hat conference showing how these widespread security flaws could enable digital stalking of children.
