During a massive solar superstorm in November 2025, scientists discovered unprecedented coast-to-coast atmospheric disturbances across the continental US that disrupted GPS signals by more than 33 feet in some locations—a phenomenon never before observed at this scale. The disturbance occurred when energetic particles from the geomagnetic storm created density fluctuations in the ionosphere, through which GPS signals travel, causing significant disruptions to precision agriculture and autonomous vehicles.
