Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space

Google is launching a prototype satellite through Project Suncatcher to test whether its AI hardware can survive and operate effectively in space conditions, including extreme radiation, vibrations, and cooling challenges. The long-term goal is to determine if space-based infrastructure could host scalable machine learning systems, leveraging the near-constant sunlight in low Earth orbit to generate significantly more solar power than on Earth. Future missions aim to link satellite clusters using high-bandwidth lasers to manage larger AI workloads in orbit.
