Researchers have created an interactive map projecting when individual glaciers worldwide will disappear based on climate scenarios ranging from 1.5°C to 4°C of warming, using three glacier models to estimate extinction dates when glaciers shrink below 0.01 km² or retain less than 1% of their original volume. The study, released for the UN International Year of Glacier Preservation (2025), recognizes that even small glaciers hold cultural, ecological, and societal significance beyond their contribution to sea-level rise and regional water resources.
