GitHub's new Git storage architecture
GitHub announced a new Git storage architecture capable of handling thousands of writes per second while maintaining low-latency reads, designed to support agentic development at scale. The architecture decouples storage from compute and minimizes coordination by recognizing that only reference updates require consensus, while Git objects can be stored independently since they are immutable and content-addressed. This infrastructure, tested to handle 5,000 concurrent agents pushing 7,200 updates per second to a single repository, enables GitHub to support the shift toward agent-driven development while maintaining Git's existing user experience.
